Shortstop Spirits & Deli opened just before the 2026 summer season, taking over the familiar street-level space at Atlantic Avenue and Vassar Square long known as Bruno’s Italian Market — a longtime neighborhood deli that closed permanently earlier in the year. Following a full interior renovation, the roughly 1,000-square-foot space reopened with fresh-sliced Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, a full package-store selection of beer, wine, and spirits, and a menu of sports-themed sandwiches that’s quickly become the shop’s signature.
Located one block from the beach and boardwalk, on the ground floor of the Vassar Square Condominiums, Shortstop serves as a genuine one-stop spot for Downbeach residents, condo owners, and beachgoers alike — sandwiches and coffee in the morning, cold cuts by the pound in the afternoon, and beer, wine, ice, and mixers for the evening, all without leaving the block.
Signature Sandwiches
The “Chicken Cutlet Corner” menu leans hard into Philly sports culture, with hot cutlet sandwiches like the Shortstop (broccoli rabe, prosciutto, fresh mozz), the Jason Kelce (buffalo chicken, Cooper Sharp, blue cheese drizzle), and the Fly Eagle Fly (soppressata, sharp provolone, long hots) — alongside turkey and traditional Italian hoagies named for the likes of Derek Jeter, Charles Barkley, and Larry Bowa.
Beyond the counter, Shortstop holds a full plenary retail liquor license, stocking everything from craft beer and wine to top-shelf spirits and canned cocktails — plus its own take on grab-and-go convenience with chilled “Booze Bags” and Beach Buckets built for a short walk to a condo deck or rental porch. Breakfast sandwiches, Beach Boxes, party platters, and a stocked convenience-store aisle of everyday essentials round out the shop’s role as a genuine neighborhood market, not just a sandwich stop.
