Today marks another chapter in the story of Ventnor City—a place with roots that stretch across the Atlantic and a history that continues to shape the community we know today.
While March 17, 1903 is recognized as Ventnor’s official incorporation date, the story of how the city came to be begins years earlier, with a vision inspired by travel, landscape, and opportunity.
How Ventnor Got Its Name
In the late 1800s, an American couple visiting England became captivated by the beauty of a seaside town on the Isle of Wight called Ventnor. When they returned home, that impression stayed with them.
Not long after, as the Camden and Atlantic Land Company began developing land just south of Atlantic City, Mrs. S. Bartram Richards suggested the name “Ventnor” for the growing community. Her recommendation was made on January 8, 1889—and officially adopted the very next day.
It was a name rooted in inspiration, and one that would soon define an entirely new shore destination.
From Vision to City
Although the name was established in 1889, Ventnor did not become an official city until March 17, 1903, when it was formally incorporated by the State of New Jersey.
That moment was codified through Chapter 51 of New Jersey law, which defined the city’s boundaries along Absecon Beach—stretching between Atlantic City and what was then South Atlantic City, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Beach Thoroughfare.
With that act, Ventnor City was established as its own municipality—its residents officially united as a community with a shared identity and future.
A Shore Town with Lasting Character
Located on Absecon Island, Ventnor has always balanced its role as a seaside escape with the feel of a tight-knit neighborhood. Just south of Atlantic City, it offers a quieter stretch of shoreline while remaining deeply connected to the energy of the region.
Even today, you can still see echoes of its early development—particularly in the turn-of-the-century homes and summer cottages that helped define the town’s character during its early growth in the 1910s and 1920s.
That blend of history and coastal charm continues to shape Ventnor’s identity more than a century later.
Ventnor Today
Today, Ventnor City is home to just over 9,000 residents and remains an essential part of the Absecon Island community alongside Atlantic City, Margate, and Longport.
Its beaches, boardwalk connection, local businesses, and strong sense of community continue to make it a place people return to year after year—whether for a summer escape or to call home full-time.
Celebrating Ventnor
From its naming in 1889 to its incorporation in 1903, Ventnor’s story is one of vision, growth, and community.
Today, we celebrate not just a date—but the people, places, and history that continue to define Ventnor City.
Happy Anniversary, Ventnor 🎉
